September 2007 Garden Tips

September 1
Now is the time to plant fall blooming crocus. Stop in early for the best selection.

September 2
Use Greenview Fairway Formula Fall Fertilizer 29-2-10 for winter hardiness and quick spring green- up of your lawn.

September 3
Plant cool-season salad greens, like arugula, lettuce and spinach in cold frames now.

September 4
Keep feeders filled with Lyric Bird Seed and C&S Suet. New at Primex: C&S Ready-To-Use Suet and Seed Sacks.

September 5
For complete lawn renovation, kill grass and weeds with RoundUp. Ten days after application of RoundUp you may seed and apply a starter fertilizer such as Lebanon Pro 10-20-15.

September 6
Fall is for planting! Spruce up the landscape with fall pansies, flowering cabbage and kale, garden mums, fall blooming perennials, ornamental grasses, trees and shrubs. Check out our amazing collection.

September 7
Divide most spring and summer blooming perennials now. Cut back perennials as foliage dies unless the plants feature ornamental seed heads. Leave ornamental grasses until early spring, the dried foliage will enhance the winter landscape.

September 8
To maintain a healthy lawn, your soil pH should be in the range of 6.8-7.0. Let us test your lawn pH to determine if you need to apply lime this season. Bring in one Dixie cup of soil taken from the depth of 4 inches below the soil surface. A 50 lb. bag of lime will raise your soil pH about .5 per 1000 sq. feet.

September 9
Pick up spring-flowering bulbs early for the best selection!

September 10
Kill broadleaf weeds in your lawn with Monterey Spurge Power, Ortho Weed-B-Gon or Speed Zone. Apply when the temperature is below 82 degrees Fahrenheit and there is no rain in the forecast for 24 hours after application.

September 11
Harvest apples and pears from your home orchard or take your family to a fruit farm where you can pick your own.

September 12
Reduce fall weed seed germination with Greenview Preen, Concern Weed Prevention Plus or Miracle-Gro Garden Weed Preventer.

September 13
Harvest pumpkins when the skin is completely orange. This should be done on a dry day with a sharp knife. Cut the pumpkins from the vine, never pull.

September 14
Apply lime to lilac and clematis.

September 15
Today is Reward Member’s Double Points Day!

September 16
To keep deer and other animals from grazing in your gardens apply Shake Away or spray either Deer Stopper or Liquid Fence. You may also set up a Scarecrow motion-activated sprinkler to scare critters away.

September 17
Hornets, wasps and yellow jackets can be a real nuisance this time of year. Control them with Bee Catchers, Ortho Hornet & Wasp Killer or Victor Poison-Free Killer.

September 18
Check the lawn for grubs. Increased activities of skunks, raccoons and moles, as well as brown patches that peel back easily are all indication of grub activity. Apply granular Bayer Advanced 24-Hour Grub Control with Dylox, granular Sevin, Beneficial Nematodes or Milky Spore (a natural and safe bacterial control).

September 19
Hang an autumn wreath on the front door and plant a few mums and ornamental kale to welcome the season. Stop by Primex for your indoor and outdoor fall decorating needs.

September 20
Apply Espoma Holly-tone to evergreens and acid-loving loving plants and Espoma Tree-tone to deciduous trees and shrubs at one-half the rate of your spring application.

September 21
Control moles with Bonide Moletox II.

September 22
Protect tender plants from early frost by covering them with Reemay fabric.

September 23
Today is the first day of autumn. Stop by Primex today and save 20% off your entire purchase (some exclusions apply).

September 24
Keep an eye out for bag worms. If spotted, pick them off and destroy to control next year’s population.

September 25
Spray Hemlocks with Bonide All Seasons Horticulture Oil to control wooly adelgid.

September 26
Feed fish with Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Spring-Autumn Food.

September 27
Dig up gladiolus as the foliage begins to yellow and store for the winter. Cannas may be dug after the first frost.

September 28
Clean out the garden pond, add Microb-Lift (Fall) and cover with pond netting before the leaves start falling.

September 29
Now is the time to dig and divide peonies. Add Espoma Bone Meal to the soil to help promote strong root growth.

September 30
Autumn is an excellent time to prepare your vegetable garden for next spring. When fall crops are finished producing, clean out the garden bed. Turn in a quality soil amender such as Bumper Crop. Plant a cover crop of winter rye to add nitrogen to the bed in the spring.
