2007 Garden Tips
You may continue to plant trees, shrubs, perennials and spring
blooming bulbs until the ground freezes.
Consult the Original Old Farmer’s 2008 Almanac
for this winter's weather forcast.
If you haven’t already, fertilize hollies, azaleas, rhododendrons,
hemlocks and other acid-loving plants with Espoma Holly-tone.
This should be done at half strength in the fall.
As leaves drop from your trees add them to your compost pile.
At Primex, we offer several styles of composters. Use Espoma
Bio-Excelerator to help speed the decomposition of difficult
to compost organic matter.
Don't let the crisp fall air fool you into thinking that it is
too late to attack those annoying lawn weeds. Speed Zone
works great for late season broadleaf weed control.
When mowing for the last time this fall cut grass fairly short,
this will prevent it from matting under the snow.
Pot up spring flowering bulbs and place in your refrigerator or
cold frame. These will provide late winter or early spring blooms
for enjoying indoors.
Make leaf clean up easier by using an Ames Kodiak Rake.
Keep lawn bags open and hands free with the Lawn Funnel
or use the Garden Brand Multi-purpose Fold Away Leaf Bag.
Fertilize your trees with Jobe’s Tree Spikes.
Prepare the vegetable garden for next spring. Amend the soil with
Bumper Crop and don't forget to add lime if necessary.
Dig your trench now for peas to be planted on St. Patrick's Day.
Cover the trench and backfill soil to keep dry for early season
planting.
When you are finished with them for the season, empty soil from
terra cotta pots and wash them with a 10% bleach solution to sterilize
them for next year. Store pots in the shed, garage or basement
for the winter as they will crack when water freezes and expands
in the pores of terra cotta.
Use plant lights to help your houseplants thrive during the shorter
days of winter.
Christmas cactus need cool temperatures and complete darkness
at night bloom at Christmas time. When flower buds start to show
color, place plants in a sunny location and feed with Jack’s
Classic Blossom Booster.
Have your kids help you rake leaves, it's great family fun and
wonderful way to get exercise. We have a unique selection of rakes
and tools designed just for kids. Check out our Sponge Bob and
Dora the Explorer garden gloves.
Spray plants with Liquid Fence or Messina
Deer Stopper and use Easy Gardener’s Deer
Fencing or X-treme Deer Barrier to prevent damage from
deer and other animals.
Now is a good time to transplant roses while they are domant.
This winter, use the RoseGard Pyramid to protect
the bud union of hybrid tea roses. It is also useful for providing
winter protection for tender perennials and new transplants.

or screen using burlap and stakes and also spray plants with Wilt-Pruf.
