November 2007 Garden Tips

November 1
You may continue to plant trees, shrubs, perennials and spring blooming bulbs until the ground freezes.

November 2
Consult the Original Old Farmer’s 2008 Almanac for this winter's weather forcast.

November 3
If you haven’t already, fertilize hollies, azaleas, rhododendrons, hemlocks and other acid-loving plants with Espoma Holly-tone. This should be done at half strength in the fall.

November 4
As leaves drop from your trees add them to your compost pile. At Primex, we offer several styles of composters. Use Espoma Bio-Excelerator to help speed the decomposition of difficult to compost organic matter.

November 5
Don't let the crisp fall air fool you into thinking that it is too late to attack those annoying lawn weeds. Speed Zone works great for late season broadleaf weed control.

November 6
When mowing for the last time this fall cut grass fairly short, this will prevent it from matting under the snow.

November 7
Pot up spring flowering bulbs and place in your refrigerator or cold frame. These will provide late winter or early spring blooms for enjoying indoors.

November 8
Make leaf clean up easier by using an Ames Kodiak Rake. Keep lawn bags open and hands free with the Lawn Funnel or use the Garden Brand Multi-purpose Fold Away Leaf Bag.

November 9
Fertilize your trees with Jobe’s Tree Spikes.

November 10
Prepare the vegetable garden for next spring. Amend the soil with Bumper Crop and don't forget to add lime if necessary. Dig your trench now for peas to be planted on St. Patrick's Day. Cover the trench and backfill soil to keep dry for early season planting.

November 11
When you are finished with them for the season, empty soil from terra cotta pots and wash them with a 10% bleach solution to sterilize them for next year. Store pots in the shed, garage or basement for the winter as they will crack when water freezes and expands in the pores of terra cotta.

November 12
Use plant lights to help your houseplants thrive during the shorter days of winter.

November 13
Christmas cactus need cool temperatures and complete darkness at night bloom at Christmas time. When flower buds start to show color, place plants in a sunny location and feed with Jack’s Classic Blossom Booster.

November 14

November 15
Spray plants with Liquid Fence or Messina Deer Stopper and use Easy Gardener’s Deer Fencing or X-treme Deer Barrier to prevent damage from deer and other animals.

November 16
Now is a good time to transplant roses while they are domant. This winter, use the RoseGard Pyramid to protect the bud union of hybrid tea roses. It is also useful for providing winter protection for tender perennials and new transplants.

November 17

Spray Bonide All Seasons Oil on plants help reduce the insect population next year.

November 19
Mulch landscape beds with 2 – 3 inches of Right Dress or Shredded Hardwood Mulch for soil temperature moderation, moisture retention and for winter beautification.

November 20
Pot up amaryllis and paperwhites for indoor blooms this winter. At Primex, we have a great selection of both.

November 21
Winterize your lawnmower: drain gasoline, replace old oil, remove spark plugs, spray cylinder with oil and sharpen blade.

November 22
Happy Thanksgiving!

November 23
Feed your lawn with Greenview Winter Green 10-16-20 or Lebanon Pro 10-20-15 to stimulate strong roots this fall.

November 24
Protect evergreens from sun and wind, create a wind break fence or screen using burlap and stakes and also spray plants with Wilt-Pruf.

November 25
Be sure to store all liquid garden chemicals where they will not freeze this winter. Empty all spray tanks, rinse well and allow to them to dry before storing.

November 26

November 27
Do not let your plants go into the winter with dry soil. Continue watering, especially newly planted trees, shrubs and broadleaf evergreens, into the early winter.

November 28
Use Bayer Advanced Garden Tree and Insect Control for 12 months of insect protection. Use anytime before the ground freezes for control of early season insects in the new year.

Spray azaleas, rhododendrons hollies and evergreens with Wilt-Pruf to help them through the winter with minimal moisture loss. Save enough for your Fresh Cut Christmas Tree and Greens to keep them looking green longer.

November 30
Sharpen, clean, oil and store your garden tools for the winter.
