May 2007 Garden Tips

May 1
If you did not seed this spring, or if your newly seeded lawn has been mowed three times, you may use Bayer All-in-One Weed Killer for Lawns to control broad leaf weeds in your lawn.

May 2
Thin seedlings of early-planted crops such as; carrots, lettuce, spinach and beets. Protect cabbages from cabbageworms and leafy vegetables from leafminers by covering with Reemay fabric. When the soil temperature reaches 60 degrees, sow warm- and cool-season vegetable and herb seeds. Replenish poor soil with essential micronutrients for optimum plant vigor, growth and fruit by using Black Gold, plant micronutirents with humic acid.

May 3
Use Espoma Bio-Tone Starter Microbial Plant Food to add living microbes to your soil. These mircrobes help plants establish faster, help prevent transplant loss, promote deeper roots, better blooms and fruit and improve soil structure.

May 4
Add Barley Straw or Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Algae Fix to your pond to control algae growth. Add Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Bio-Filter Booster or Microbe-Lift Gel to jumpstart the bacteria and enzymes in your pond filtering system.
