April 2007 Garden Tips

April 1
Stop by Primex for seed potatoes. Plant when the soil temperature reaches 45 degrees. We also carry asparagus roots, horseradish, rhubarb and strawberries, onion sets, shallots and garlic.

April 2
Early this month apply Lebanon Team to your lawn to prevent crabgrass later on this summer. If the lawn was seeded last fall, or if seeding this spring, use Tupersan for crabgrass control.

April 3
Begin your rose care program of fertilizing, disease and insect control and watering. Spray Bonide Fung-onil to control blackspot and use Bayer 2-in-1 Fertilizer & Insect Control.

April 4
Continue your spring clean up. Apply Preen or Concern Weed Preventer Plus corn gluten to flower beds to prevent future weeds and mulch them with Right Dress shredded hardwood mulch, bark chips or gravel.

April 5
Start summer-flowering bulbs indoors, including caladium, canna, gloxinia and tuberous begonias for planting outside after May 15th.

April 6
Keep an eye out for slugs. Use Sluggo, slug control that is safe for pets and wildlife.

April 7
Control leaf spot on Mountain Laurel with Bonide Fung-onil, first application is at spring bud break.

April 8

April 9
Spray Liquid Fence on ornamentals for deer control. Messina Wildlife Deer Stopper is safe to use on fruits and vegetables.

April 10
Use Concern Weed Preventer Plus corn gluten on your lawn to prevent crabgrass. Apply a second time in June.

April 11
Apply Bonide Fruit Tree Spray to all fruit trees as buds swell, and again at petal drop. Repeat every 2 weeks up to 10 days before harvest. Fertilize with Ross Fruit Tree Spikes.

April 12
Sow cold tolerant annuals in a cold frame; try alyssum, baby's breath, snapdragons, salvia and verbena.

April 13
If you have noticed tunneling in your lawn apply Bonide Molemax to encourage moles to move away or use Moletox to eradicate them.

April 14
As soil becomes workable, till your vegetable garden turning under your green manure, also at this time you may add cow manure, humus or Bumper Crop.

April 15
Protect cabbages from cabbageworms and leafy vegetables from leaf miner by covering with Reemay Fabric.

April 16
Wake up your garden pond for the season. Clean out your pumps and filters. Ecolab Microbe-Lift or Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Pond-Zyme provide microbes to break down sludge and help keep water cleaner. Use Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Simply-Clear, a fast acting bacterial pond clarifier and Gel Filter Pad Bacterial Inoculant or Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Biofilter Booster to quickly restore biological activity to your filter to stabilize your pond’s environments.

April 17
Use Messenger on fruits, vegetables, flowers, shrubs and houseplants to boost growth, flower and fruit production.

April 18
Remove infected stems and litter of pachysandra and begin spraying every 2 weeks (until hot weather) with Liquid Copper or Bonide Fung-onil to control volutella blight.

April 19
Use Espoma Bio-Tone Starter to stimulate root growth as you plant and transplant trees and shrubs, ground covers, perennials and annuals.

April 20
Invite Hummingbirds to your garden by putting out your Hummingbird feeders. Perky Pet Instant Nectar or Instant Liquid Nectar Concentrate are both convenient way to fill your feeder.

April 21
To control chickweed, clover, ground ivy, henbit and violets, apply Spurge Power or Speed Zone to an established lawn.

April 22

For season-long feeding, apply Osmocote when planting annuals, vegetables and perennials. Osmocote is a particularly good choice for container gardening.

April 24
Fertilize acid loving plants like rhododendron, azalea, pieris and mountain laurel with Holly-tone.

April 25
Use Havahart Critter Ridder to safely repel skunks, groundhogs, dogs, cats squirrels and raccoons. One application last 30 days!

April 26
Apply Beneficial Nematodes to control black vine weevil and beetle populations later in the season.

April 27
Dig and divide crowded spring bulbs after they have finished blooming. Enrich soil with compost or manure and add Espoma Bone Meal or 0-20-0.

April 28
National Arbor Day today! Join us this Friday, Saturday and Sunday (April 28th, 29th and 30th) when all Trees, excluding only fruit trees, are 15% off.

April 29
Keep an eye open for saw fly larvae on your needled evergreens, when noticed spray with either Sevin or Eight.

April 30
Apply Bonide Lime Sulfur to peonies for Botrytis. Place gro-thru sets over peonies, grasses or any other perennials in need of support.
