December 1

December 2
Prune hardwood fruit trees now: apples, pears and cherries. We have a fantastic selection of pruning tools that include Felco, Barnel, Gilmour, Bahco and the Rumford Gardener.
December 3
Cover your compost pile with a sheet of black plastic to retain heat and moisture this winter.
December 4
If you have fish in your garden pond be certain to use a pond heater this winter. This is necessary to release toxic gases from being trapped below the ice. We carry Farm Innovators Floating Pond De-Icer, a thermostatically controlled pond heater with a three year warranty, as well as Thermo-Pond 3.0, the worlds most efficient and effective pond heater.
December 5
Clean and repair garden tools. Coat handles with linseed oil to retard drying. Grease all metal parts to prevent rust. Paint wooden handles of hand tools a bright color to help locate them more easily when you set them down in the garden.
December 6
Use a bird bath de-icer to keep your birdbath ice-free this winter. At Primex we have several styles to choose from: Nelson Blue Devil Bird Bath Heater, Farm Innovators Bird Bath De-Icer (Model B-9) and, new to Primex, the Ice Eliminator, a 50 watt thermostatically controlled de-icer for the bird bath.
December 7
Decorate for the winter. Clean window boxes. Dispose of old soil and plants. Fill box with a thick layer of sand and add evergreens sprays and berried branches. We carry a great assortment of fresh greens for the winter. As you decorate for the holiday remember that Primex also has fresh wreaths, centerpieces, garlands, cut trees, Poinsettias, Cyclamens and more.
December 8
Join us Friday evenings this December, from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM in our greenhouse, for ongoing, informal wreath decorating demonstrations. Observe our staff as they work on our locally famous custom creations. You may also gather ideas for your own wreath. We have fresh wreaths, greens and berries, ribbon, holiday pics and ornaments for decorating your personal creation. This is also a great time to avoid the crowds at the mall and start your holiday shopping at Primex. Our gift shop, store and nursery are also open late on Friday evenings in December.
December 9
Muck Shoes and Boots keep feet dry and toasty in frosty weather, they also make a great holiday gift. Add gro-lamps to your home. Use them to brighten a dark corner or to supplement the diminished winter sunlight in order to grow healthy, happy houseplants. We carry Agrosun bulbs and HydroFarm fixtures. We are able to special order carts and fixtures from Growers Supply. Stop by and we will show you what is available.
December 11
Protect sensitive plants from the winter wind and sun by constructing a screen made of burlap stretched between wooden stakes. If you have not yet done so, spray broadleaf evergreens with Wilt Pruf on a warm day (45 degrees Fahrenheit or above). To provide continuous protection, spray plants a second time in six weeks.
December 12
Did you know that paperwhites help prevent cabin fever? These easy to force bulbs require no cooling period to flower and provide an abundance of fragrant blooms to brighten the winter home. We also carry Amaryllis and an assortment of other bulbs for gift giving and forcing this season.
December 13
Keep your houseplants healthy this winter, provide them with an aura of humidity by using a humidity tray or saucer filled with stones and water.
December 14
Select your Christmas tree from of our fresh cut Douglas and Fraser Firs or from our offering of small artificial trees, perfect for an apartment or as a second tree. Primex also carries tree trimmings and accessories such as Good Tidings Mini Lights, LED Lights, extension cords, ornaments and garland. LED lights are a fantastic bargain. These environmentally friendly lights burn cool to the touch and provide an energy savings of up to 90% over traditional holiday lights. You may safely string up to 20 sets of LED lights together, the string will stay lit with one or more non-functioning bulbs and the average lifetime is 10 times longer than regular Christmas lights.

Chanukah begins at sunset. Decorate a Christmas tree for the birds! We carry Pine Tree Farms Birdie Wreaths and Mixed Seed Bells. These lovely edible ornaments for our fine feathered friends are made of wild bird seed.

Keep your holiday greens fresh longer by soaking them in water and spraying them with Wilt Pruf. Add Prolong to the soaking water and extend the freshness of the greens even further.

Less than a week to Christmas, if you're not sure what to choose we have gift cards that are sure to please all of the gardeners on your list.

Remember to check your Christmas tree stand daily for water to keep your tree fresh through the holidays. To make this job easier, we carry Santa’s Solution, a watering system that relieves you from crawling under the tree to water and will stop filling automatically when your tree stand is full.

Make sure that you are prepared for the big snow storm with shovels, gloves, boots, scrapers and de-icing agents.

Protect plants from deer damage with Messina Wildlife Deer Stopper or Liquid Fence.
December 30
Instead of dragging that Christmas tree to the curb how about recycling it? Lean the tree near a bird feeder to provide protection for our hungry friends. You may also cut the limbs and use them to mulch perennials that are borderline hardy or to protect them frost heaving.
